Boone NC Cycling Mountain Bike Trails

“I passed the rest of the trip in a state of near-reverence for those beautiful, soulful mountains,” Armstrong wrote. “I rode with a pure love of the bike, a pure love of life itself. As I rode on, Boone began to feel like the Holy Land to me, a place I’d come to as if on a pilgrimage.”

The High Country area of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and especially throughout the Boone NC area, offers routes and trails for cyclists of all skills and styles.  Whether you want to explore the routes favored by cyclists Lance Armstrong and Greg LeMond or by the Tour DuPont, try out our mountain bike trails on Sugar Mountain or Beech Mountain (complete with chairlift ride to the top), take a leisurely ride along the New River in Todd or the Blue Ridge Parkway, or explore the Rocky Knob Mountain Bike Park, the NC mountains have plenty to offer.

Many travel to the Boone and Banner Elk NC area to follow the training routes preferred by cycling greats.  Routes from Valle Crucis to the peak of Beech Mountain offer scenic, paved roads to put together just the length and intensity desired.  Many cyclists that take part in the well-known Blood, Sweat and Gears cycling race are also familiar with the 58-mile Snake Mountain Loop.

Want to ride a chairlift to the top, and spend your time racing down the mountains?  Check out Sugar Mountain Resort – considered one of the most demanding and thrilling mountain bike downhill courses on the East Coast, their National Expert Downhill Track is perfect for the advanced, but they also feature easy, intermediate and advanced trails as well.  Nearby Beech Mountain Resort offers similar options, with bike rentals available through an outpost of Magic Cycles.  The town of Beech Mountain also offers the Emerald Outback, an eight-mile network of trails including the Wild Iris Loop and West Bowl Loop.

For a more leisurely excursion, enjoy the ten flat miles meandering along the New River between Todd and Fleetwood while cycling on the Railroad Grade Road.  An even shorter option enjoyed by many cyclists is along the Watauga River Road in Valle Crucis, or load up the kids and head over to the Valle Crucis Community Park for their paved loop trail.

One of the reasons the Boone area has become known as a top Southeast destination for mountain biking is the Rocky Knob Mountain Bike Park, created in 2009 with 185 acres of trails.  Offering mountain bike trails for all levels and also accessible to hikers and trail runners, this park is just on the edge of Boone going toward Todd, NC.
